Laser hair removal
Laser hair removal is an advancement in aesthetic medicine that allows for a targeted and long-lasting reduction of hair growth. Unlike shaving or waxing, it targets the root to progressively slow down and permanently reduce regrowth. Thanks to state-of-the-art technology used at Maison Tóā, the treatment ensures a comfortable experience, even on sensitive skin and delicate areas. Suitable for both women and men, it provides smooth skin and long-lasting, harmonious results over time.

What is laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is an aesthetic medical technique that targets the hair pigment to progressively act on the hair follicle and reduce regrowth over the course of several sessions. More precise and effective than intense pulsed light or diode laser, it allows hair to be treated while preserving the surrounding skin.
Objective
The goal of laser hair removal is to gradually reduce hair density, regrowth frequency, and hair thickness. The desired result is smoother, clearer skin with fewer irritations caused by shaving or waxing.
Principle
The laser emits a targeted light absorbed by the melanin in the hair, which is converted into heat to gradually disable the hair follicle. An integrated sapphire cooling system protects the skin and makes the treatment comfortable, even on sensitive areas.
Technology
Maison Tóā uses a medical laser with dual wavelengths combining Alexandrite (used for lighter skin types) and Nd:YAG (suitable for darker skin types), equipped with an integrated cooling system. The physician selects the wavelength and settings according to the skin phototype, tanning level, and treatment area to optimize both effectiveness and comfort.
Differences compared to other treatments
Laser hair removal differs from intense pulsed light (IPL). Medical lasers use a targeted wavelength, whereas IPL emits a broader spectrum of light. The choice of treatment depends on the skin type, hair type, treatment area, and desired outcome.
Indications and treated areas
Laser hair removal is intended for patients wishing to permanently reduce hair growth through a precise, effective, and comfortable treatment. It can be used on various areas of the face and body, for both women and men, and is adapted to each skin type through a personalized protocol.
Main indications
Treatment of folliculitis, pilonidal cysts, and excessive hair growth in the context of PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome).
Secondary indications
Dense or persistent hair growth, particularly in men (back, chest, neck, etc.), where hair density and hormonal influence may require a longer treatment protocol.
Treated areas
Underarms, bikini area (sides, partial, full), upper lip, chin, lower legs, and full legs.
Specific areas
Forearms, full arms, thighs, buttocks, hands and feet, shoulders, nape of the neck, midline of the abdomen, intergluteal cleft, chest, torso, and full back.
Limits
The result is a long-lasting reduction rather than a guaranteed 100% permanent removal: hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause, hormonal disorders) may stimulate new hair growth, and maintenance sessions may be considered. On the face, the presence of fine downy hair must be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
How does the session at Maison Tóā clinic in Lausanne take place?
1 The consultation

The first appointment begins with a personalized consultation at Maison Tóā. Our aesthetic medicine specialists assess your skin, expectations, and medical history in order to determine whether laser hair removal is suitable for your needs. This step allows us to define an adapted protocol and explain how the session will proceed.
2 The treatment
The area must be shaved 24 to 48 hours before the session. The physician applies either Alexandrite or Nd:YAG laser depending on the skin phototype. The light beam then selectively targets the hair melanin and acts directly on the hair follicle while preserving the surrounding tissues. Thanks to the integrated cooling system, the treatment is comfortable, even on the most sensitive areas, and does not require anesthesia.
3 Follow-up

After the session, mild redness or a sensation of heat may appear, usually disappearing within less than 24 hours. Daily activities can be resumed immediately. The application of a soothing cream may be recommended after the session. However, it is advised to avoid sun exposure and apply SPF 50+ sunscreen in the following days to protect the skin’s balance and optimize treatment results.
Results: What should you expect?
BEFORE / AFTER
First results
After a session, the treated hairs are gradually expelled over 1 to 3 weeks (they fall out on their own over time).
Stabilization
Regrowth becomes slower and sparser session after session. In practice, around 10 sessions are often required to achieve up to 90% reduction in standard body areas (underarms, legs, bikini line). Hormone-dependent areas such as the face may require more sessions.
Duration
The result is long-lasting once a full protocol is completed, and a large proportion of treated hairs do not regrow. However, hormonal variations may still promote the growth of new hairs over time.
Maintenance
The interval between sessions is approximately 4 to 6 weeks for the face and 6 to 8 weeks for the body. An annual maintenance session may be considered depending on your situation, particularly in the presence of hormonal factors.
Variability
The number of sessions and the results depend on your skin phototype, hair color, hair thickness, and the treated area. Results may vary from one person to another.
Contraindications and side effects
What are the contraindications?
Certain situations require postponing or adapting the treatment: pregnancy, skin infection in the treatment area, recent tanning, use of photosensitizing medications, or a history of pigmentary reactions. On the face, the presence of fine downy hair is assessed on a case-by-case basis. The laser is not applied over tattoos: the tattooed area is protected and avoided.
Possible side effects
The after-effects of a laser hair removal session are generally mild and do not require social downtime. After treatment, temporary effects may occur, such as redness, a sensation of heat, mild irritation, or localized swelling. These reactions usually disappear within less than 24 hours. The application of a soothing cream may be recommended if needed.

Alternatives and complementary treatments
Alternative treatments
Intense pulsed light (IPL) may be considered as an alternative, but compared with medical Alexandrite and Nd:YAG laser, its light spectrum is broader and less precise. Traditional methods such as shaving, waxing, or mechanical epilation remain possible, but they do not provide long-term action on the hair follicle and require repeated maintenance over time.
Combinations with other treatments
At home, shaving may be continued between sessions if needed. However, waxing, tweezing, and other hair removal methods that remove the hair from the root are discouraged in order to preserve the hair follicle and optimize treatment effectiveness throughout the protocol.

Frequently asked questions
Is laser hair removal really permanent?
We refer to long-lasting reduction rather than “permanent” hair removal: regrowth is significantly reduced, with occasional maintenance sometimes needed.
How many sessions are needed?
Usually 6 to 10 sessions for body areas (underarms, legs, bikini line), and sometimes more for the face. A personalized protocol is recommended during consultation.
Is it painful?
The integrated sapphire cooling system makes the treatment comfortable, even on the most sensitive areas.
Do you need to shave before the session?
Yes, you should shave the area beforehand, usually 24 hours before the appointment (the area must not be waxed).
Does laser work on all hair types?
The treatment targets the melanin in the hair. Dark hairs are generally the most responsive, while white, blonde, or red hairs respond more variably.
Can you expose yourself to the sun?
Sun and UV exposure should be avoided before and after the session, and SPF 50+ sunscreen should be applied.
Which areas can be treated?
The face (upper lip, chin) and the body (underarms, bikini line, legs, arms, back, chest/torso, hands, feet, etc.).
Can a tattooed area be treated?
The laser is not applied over tattoos: the tattooed area is protected and avoided during the session.
What is the interval between sessions?
Approximately 4 to 6 weeks for the face and 6 to 8 weeks for the body, adjusted according to observed regrowth.
