Tattoo removal

The StarWalker PQX picosecond laser from Fotona is the latest picosecond laser for tattoo and permanent makeup removal. This new laser features the highest energy and power pico on the market today allowing speed and precision in treatments.

The picosecond laser pulses induce a destruction of the targeted pigment in a photoacoustic way, totally non-thermal, which makes it a very safe option for all skin types.

For whom is the treatment appropriate?

Anyone who has a tattoo or permanent makeup that he or she wishes to remove.

Whether it’s a youthful mistake, a design that no longer appeals, a poorly executed design or a contour that has lost its definition, whatever the reason for your interest in tattoo removal, you will be treated at Maison Tóā by FMH specialists who are used to working with high-energy lasers such as the SatrWalker PQX picosecond laser.

What kind of tattoo can be treated?

The latest generation picosecond laser is capable of emitting a picosecond pulse, which is 100 times shorter and more powerful than the old Q-switch nanosecond lasers. This type of laser will of course be effective on tattoos with black ink, but it will also be effective on stubborn colors and inks, where older generation lasers failed (such as for tattoos with purple or turquoise ink).

How many sessions are needed to remove a tattoo?

With this new picosecond laser, the number of sessions is reduced by two.

A black tattoo with fine lines and ink deposited in the superficial dermis can be removed in 3-4 sessions. A black tattoo with a lot of filling or a tattoo with different colors will require 6-8 sessions.

Please note that this laser, due to its high power, can now also remove deep inks and coloured inks like red.

However, we cannot promise 100% tattoo removal on all tattoos. Depending on the ink used, there are still some tattoos that may leave a post-treatment shadow. This can then be covered by a new tattoo.

In any case, when you come to the Maison Tóā Clinic, you will be treated with the most effective and safest laser tattoo removal available today.

How does the session go?

Once the skin has been cleaned and disinfected, your doctor will adjust the parameters of the laser to target the pigment under the skin. A clicking sound is heard with each shot and confirms the effectiveness of the treatment.

The picosecond laser treatment takes place in our specialized clinic in Lausanne, Switzerland and lasts between 15 and 45 minutes.

Does it hurt?

In order to minimize the pain felt, cold anesthesia is applied directly to the area treated by the laser.

For large tattoos, an anesthetic cream can be applied 40 minutes before the treatment.

What are the after effects of the treatment?

At the end of the session, we often observe a discreet white coloring that disappears in a few minutes to give way to redness, small hemorrhagic spots and a small edema localized on the treated area.

The next day, small scabs will form on the tattoo and persist for 7-10 days. These scabs fall off by themselves and the tattoo will gradually fade in the following weeks. It is important to avoid touching these scabs which allow a good healing.

In rare cases, phlyctenes (small blisters) may form. These will break through on their own from the first day.

The application of a repair cream combined with SPF50 sun protection is recommended during the month following the session. Let your doctor advise you on the appropriate products.

Are there any contraindications?

Tanned skin: avoid sun exposure for 2 weeks before and after the treatment.

Our team of doctors specialized in tattoo removal in Lausanne answer your questions about the latest generation picosecond laser at Maison Tóā.

FAQ about laser tattoo removal

What is a tattoo?

A tattoo is a permanent drawing made by injecting ink into the skin, more precisely in the dermis, which is the intermediate layer of the skin between the hypodermis and the epidermis.

Is the tattoo indelible?

If permanent tattoos were once considered indelible, there are now several technologies that can remove them. Among these technologies, the most recent one that offers the best results is laser tattoo removal. The principle of laser tattoo removal is very simple. The laser penetrates through the epidermis, reaches the dermis and hits the ink pigments, dividing them into many small fragments that the immune system then absorbs, making them disappear. Depending on the type of pigment and the patient’s immune response, the laser tattoo removal treatment may require several sessions to achieve a permanent result.

Which laser to choose?

Today, there are two laser machines: the Q-Switched laser and the Picosecond laser. Let’s see the difference.

Tattoo removal with the Q-Switched laser: the Q-Switched laser technology removes the tattoo not by thermal effect but by a physical phenomenon called photodynamic pressure. Basically, the laser releases a large amount of energy in a very short time until the pigment of which the tattoo is composed bursts without burning. A typical Q-Switched laser session lasts about 30 minutes and the treatment is usually performed without anesthesia. However, for people who are more sensitive to pain, the doctor, in agreement with the patient, may decide to apply a topical local anesthetic using a cream. As for the number of sessions to be performed, it obviously depends on factors such as the size of the tattoo, the color of the pigment to be removed (black monochrome tattoos are easier to remove, which is different for other colors), the immune response of the patient and, finally, the type of skin.

Picosecond laser tattoo removal: Picosecond laser technology is a more advanced technique than the Q-Switched laser. The operating principle is the same for both technologies. However, the picosecond laser, which is more powerful than the Q-Switched laser, is able to break down the tattoo pigment faster. Since the picosecond laser can deliver energy 1,000 times faster than the Q-Switched laser, the tattoo is removed more quickly. However, since the picosecond laser is a newer technology than the Q-Switched laser, which is a more proven technique, it does not necessarily give a definitive result in less time. The number of sessions to be performed will always depend on external variables such as the area where the tattoo is located, the color, whether it is monochromatic or polychromatic, the immune response of the patient’s skin and the size of the tattoo.

Don’t wait any longer to get rid of that tattoo you no longer want. Go to Maison Tóā clinic and get it removed quickly and efficiently.
