What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery procedure that increases the volume and improves the shape of the breasts. It is intended for women who want to restore a more harmonious bust line after a loss of volume (pregnancy, weight loss, breastfeeding) or simply achieve a more balanced and feminine silhouette.
This procedure can be performed in two ways:
With breast implants, placed under the gland or under the muscle, depending on the patient’s body type and the desired result.
With breast lipofilling (autologous fat), using the patient’s own fat removed by liposuction, for a natural result without foreign bodies.
The goal is to achieve a harmonious, natural-looking bust that is in keeping with each patient’s figure, respecting the proportions and balance of the body.
- Why choose breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation is for women who want to restore or reveal a more harmonious bust line: correct asymmetry, restore volume after pregnancy or weight loss, or simply enhance their figure.
The goal is not to change the nature of the breasts, but to restore balance and confidence, while respecting the proportions of the body. Available to all patients aged 18 and over, the procedure is performed at the Clinique de Montchoisi in Lausanne.
How is breast augmentation treatment performed?
The day of the procedure
Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia at the Montchoisi Clinic and takes an average of one hour. A 4 cm incision is made along the crease under the breast.
The surgeon then creates a pocket for the implant, which will be positioned either under the pectoral muscle or under the mammary gland, depending on various criteria such as breast shape and skin elasticity. The choice of location is discussed in advance with the surgeon to ensure a harmonious and lasting result.
The stages of the procedure
Duration of the procedure
Breast augmentation surgery generally lasts between 1 and 2 hours. The exact duration depends on the technique chosen and the degree of customization of the surgical procedure.
General anesthesia
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia with propofol, which allows for rapid sedation and a gentle awakening. This method is well established and well tolerated by the majority of patients.
Incision
The incision can be made in three main ways:
- At the level of the areola, for a very discreet scar.
- In the inframammary fold, offering great precision of placement.
- In the armpit, to avoid any visible scarring on the breast.
Closure and immediate follow-up
The incisions are closed using absorbable sutures. A compression bandage is applied, followed by wearing a sports bra 24 hours a day for about a month. Recovery is usually quick and patients can return home the same day, depending on the case.
Postoperative care
You can return home on the same day. Pain relief medication will be prescribed for a period of 7 days.
If the implant is placed under the muscle, the initial pain may be more intense but will gradually decrease. A medical bra must be worn 24 hours a day for 4 weeks to promote healing and ensure the implant is in the correct position.
Regular follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor progress and change dressings. You can return to work after 3 to 4 days for office jobs, and light physical activity is possible after a few days. You can resume sports activities after 8 weeks.
To ensure discreet healing, specific scar treatment is recommended, including the application of specialized creams and silicone dressings, and sun protection is essential while the scar is red.
Care after surgery
After breast augmentation surgery, proper post-operative care is essential to ensure proper recovery and maximize results. The surgeon will usually place drains to remove any residual hematomas, which will be removed the following day. Painkillers are prescribed to relieve pain in the first few days after the operation.
It is important to follow specific recommendations, such as wearing a non-underwired sports bra 24 hours a day for about 30 days. During this period, it is also crucial to avoid strenuous physical activity, sauna or steam room sessions, and direct exposure to the sun until the incisions have completely healed.
Breast augmentation results
The results of breast augmentation are visible immediately after the procedure. The breasts appear more shapely and firmer, offering an aesthetic result that restores self-confidence. In the case of augmentation with breast implants, the shape of the breast becomes definitive after three months, once the swelling has subsided and the bruising has disappeared. This period also allows the skin to adapt to the new shape of the implants for a natural and harmonious appearance.
For lipofilling, the results are gradual and become definitive after about six months, once the injected fat has stabilized. Patients can thus enjoy a redesigned silhouette and naturally augmented breasts without implants.
Contraindications
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Current infection (skin or general) or wound in the area to be treated.
- Severe uncontrolled coagulation disorders.
- Unstable heart or respiratory disease contraindicating anesthesia.
- Unrealistic expectations or desire for overall weight loss: liposuction is not a treatment for obesity.
Breast implants: shapes, profiles, and materials (silicone, smooth, or textured)
At Maison Tóā, we only use the latest generation of Motiva silicone gel implants, renowned for their flexibility and durability. Their round shape and profile are chosen according to the patient’s body type and desired result: more prominent or more discreet and natural. Each option is discussed during the consultation in order to create a result that is perfectly suited to your figure.
Breast augmentation surgery is performed under general anesthesia. This cosmetic procedure involves inserting silicone implants to increase breast volume. Breast implants are inserted by Dr. Nordback, who takes care to choose the best technique to achieve the desired result.
The procedure lasts about an hour and may require an overnight stay in the clinic, especially if the implant is placed behind the muscle (retropectoral). In some cases, the operation can be performed on an outpatient basis, allowing the patient to return home the same day.
Choose your size using 3D simulation
The consultation always includes an implant trial session. Thanks to trial prostheses and 3D simulation software, you can immediately visualize the possible results of different sizes and shapes.
Together with surgeon Dr. Nordback, you will choose the size and type of implant, the ideal position (submuscular or subglandular), and the type of incision.
It is recommended that you have an ultrasound or mammogram before the procedure, and it is also advisable to stop smoking eight weeks before and after the operation for better recovery.
Breast lipofilling: natural augmentation through fat transfer
For patients who want augmentation without implants, breast lipofilling is an excellent alternative. The technique involves removing your own fat (often from the stomach or thighs), purifying it, and then reinjecting it into the breast. The result is soft, natural, and long-lasting. This approach also offers a slimming effect on the figure, while harmoniously reshaping the bust. The indication is discussed during a consultation when there is sufficient fat reserve.
Differences between augmentation with implants and lipofilling
Two approaches for the same goal: a harmonious shape. The choice depends on your body type, the desired volume, and the look you’re aiming for.
| Criteria | Breast implants | Breast fat grafting (lipofilling) |
|---|---|---|
| Nature of the results | Precise control over shape and size, with the option for greater volume or a more projected cleavage. | A very natural look, with a moderate volume increase (often up to about one cup size). |
| Type of procedure | General anesthesia, insertion of a silicone gel implant into a prepared pocket. | General or local anesthesia, fat is harvested (abdomen, thighs, hips), purified, then reinjected. |
| Length of the procedure | ≈ 1 hour (depending on the technique). | ≈ 2 to 3 hours (including harvesting and reinjection). |
| Recovery | Wear a support bra 24/7 for about 4 weeks; return to activities in 7–10 days. | Some of the fat naturally resorbs over 3 to 6 months; sometimes a second session is needed to stabilize the volume. |
| Specific risks | Rare: infection, rotation, capsular contracture, or implant rupture. | Partial resorption, asymmetry, and a slightly less predictable result. |

How much does breast augmentation cost at Maison Tóā?
How to choose a breast prosthesis?
The choice of breast prosthesis depends on several criteria:
-
Volume and size: The volume of the implants, expressed in cubic centimeters (cc), must correspond to the patient’s body type and aesthetic expectations. For example, a 360 cc implant generally increases the cup size by about two sizes.
-
Shape: Implants can be round, offering a more pronounced cleavage, or anatomical (teardrop-shaped), providing a more natural look.
-
Profile: The profile determines the projection of the breast. Low profiles offer a subtle augmentation, while high profiles provide a more pronounced projection.
-
Texture: Implants can have a smooth or textured surface. Textured implants are less likely to shift, but may carry a slightly increased risk of specific complications.
It is essential to discuss these options with a qualified plastic surgeon, who will take into account the patient’s body type, expectations, and lifestyle to recommend the most suitable prosthesis.
Where is the breast implant placed?
Breast implants can be placed in two main positions:
-
Subglandular (prepectoral): The implant is placed behind the mammary gland but in front of the pectoral muscle. This position may offer a faster and less painful recovery, but may be less suitable for patients with little breast tissue, as the implant may be more visible.
-
Submuscular (retropectoral): The implant is placed behind the pectoral muscle. This position offers a more natural look, especially in thin patients, and reduces the risk of certain complications, but recovery may be more painful and prolonged.
The choice of position depends on several factors, including the amount of existing breast tissue, the type of implant chosen, and the patient’s aesthetic goals. A thorough consultation with the surgeon will help determine the best option for each individual case.

Is there an alternative to implants for breast augmentation?
Yes, lipofilling is a natural alternative for patients who prefer to avoid implants. This technique uses the patient’s own fat to increase breast volume, offering natural results without foreign bodies.
